How To Become Your Own Home Wildlife Control Officer

How do you free an elk with its antlers stuck in your children's backyard swing set? While majestic, beautiful, and often harmless, these kinds of wild animals can also become dangerous and destructive pests. A safe solution is often a homeowner's do-it-yourself wildlife control program.

With squirrels, deer, and other cute furry creatures, many homeowners are torn between love for their almost magical appearance in one's yard to the potential danger to people and property they represent in residential settings. As a response, many people look to methods of home and farm wildlife control that are harmless to the animals yet protective of people and property.

Humans are often responsible for reducing the natural habitats of wild animals. These animals often respond by trying to establish homes and hunting grounds in the residential areas left over for them. Additionally, a temporary shortage of food or water in animal turfs will drive them to human habitats on a temporary basis.

As a result, more dangerous animals like bears can sometimes be found taking a dip in an outdoor backyard swimming pool, or a mountain lion which followed deer down from a mountain lounging on a tree branch near a golf course. In these situations, wildlife control takes on a more serious mission.

But how dangerous are squirrels and deer? Squirrels and deer can be pests, and both can be destructive as well. Do home owners need wildlife control efforts against these seemingly harmless creatures?

Squirrels are not as likely as other rodents to carry disease. If a homeowner feeds them via a squirrel feeder attached high up a tree wildlife control works well. If a person spreads feed on the ground, however, that easily accessible chow can attract skunks, prairie dogs (in Western locations) and other critters who might carry rabies, plaque, or other diseases animals share with humans.

Deer like to eat garden plants and the leaves and bark off decorative shrubs and trees. Attempts to pet or handle deer can result in them raring up on people causing, cuts, scratches, falls and other injuries.

The most effective form of home wildlife control is prevention. Animals living in a yard or frequently visiting a home do so because there is something at that location they like. Getting rid of what attracts animals is a safe and effective method of wildlife control.

Proper selection of bird feeders and feed will attract songbirds and discourage less desirable birds. Replacing plants wild animals eat with ones they don't like is a similar do-it-yourself wildlife control program. Keeping one's property free from trash and garbage works too.

So the first step in keeping an elk out of one's family swing set is taking away what attracts it. How do you free a stuck one? - very carefully. A trapped animal is frightened, often aggressive, and very dangerous. Elk are the size of adult horses and just as strong, and can drag a swing set away with them! Advice from the local humane society, large animal veterinarian, or even the police or fire department may be the safest wildlife control effort in this kind of situation.

Basic Instructions on How to Build Deer Feeders

In an effort to find excellent big game for their hunting, many people, particularly hunters although photographers as well, use deer feeders to draw their targets right within striking distance. In the meantime, ranch owners also use the same tactic to attract more deer into their vicinities. For these purposes, learning how to build a deer feeder can truly be a very worthwhile experience. To learn exactly how to get the job done, follow these simple and basic instructions on how to build deer feeders.

Before anything else, it is necessary to procure all the right tools and materials first before moving on with the building process. The required tools in making deer feeders include a pencil and a paper, a tape measure, a posthole digger, a hammer, and a saw. In the meantime, nails, wood, and feed are all the materials needed to build stable and reliable deer feeders.

When building deer feeders, the process can be classified into five separate parts, namely the location, the trough, the roof, the fences, and the foundation. Let's take a closer look at how to do these things the right way.

Choosing a Location

When selecting a location where to build a deer feeder, people must first consider the number of deer they are planning to feed. For larger numbers, a complex deer feeder may easily get the right job done. However, a simple backyard feeder is enough when planning to feed just a few numbers of deer.

Creating the Trough

In all kinds of deer feeders, the trough plays a very important role especially because it is where the feed is to be placed. In order for a trough to be effective, it must be spacious enough to accommodate a deer and at the same time simple looking in order to avoid attracting unwanted animals from gorging the feed. At the same time, it is important to arrange the walls of the trough in a slightly slanted position to allow the deer better access to the feed.

Making the Roof

The roof is another important aspect of deer feeders because it keeps the food dry. In making the roof, simply attach four poles on the outside corners of the trough. Another important thing to remember is to choose poles that are high enough for the deer to fit inside.

Installing Fences

In making deer feeders, fences can contribute to the overall effectiveness of these stations. Because deer are very much wary of all the predators near them, it is best to install some fences around these structures. By doing this, the deer will feel much safer and they will stay longer within the fence. When making fences, it is important to remember that the feeder must be stationed directly inside the fence, and can hold in between 20 to 50 deer all at the same time.

Creating Foundations

To make the deer feeders stronger and more stable, build a solid foundation for the structures by cementing their poles directly onto the ground. This is necessary to keep the feeding stations from collapsing.

Garden for Birds #4

I would like to know.....................

WHO STOLE SUMMER?????????????/

What did you do with it?

And where are you hiding it?

It seems as though just last week we were celebrating the beginning of summer.

Looking forward to our yards and gardens.

Planning vacations.

Now, parents are celebrating "BACK TO SCHOOL!"

That could mean more time in our yards and enjoying the fruits of our labor, however.

Enjoying our backyard guests.

We've seen visitors come and go.

And all the feathered families we helped raise.

Now it's time to think of visitors heading south.

Keep your feeders cleaned and filled.

Very important is a source of fresh water.

Quite often a stranger will stop for a drink and you may be fortunate enough to see your guests.

You may want to keep a camera handy.

It's getting time to think about fall projects in our yards.

It's time to let annuals go to seed and let some perennials go as well.

Say................ do you have any grasses in your yard?

I'm not referring to the grass you mow, or the stuff "Cheech and Chong" made so popular either.

I'm talking about ornamental grasses.

Ornamental grasses for your birds.

No,I haven't flipped my lid.

Grasses are becoming more popular in landscaping, yet have you

thought of the possibilities for wildlife?

For birds?

Grasses come in many varieties from only a couple inches tall to 15 feet and taller.

They come with names like "Little Bunny" and "Giganteus"

"Flamingo" and " Little Zebra"

How about "Karley Rose" or "Karl Forrester"

Names are as unique as the grasses are.

Grasses can work as a ground cover, erosion control, a wind brake and look good while doing it.

Ornamental grass can make up a border, a barrier or become a focal point in your yard.

Grasses can also help feed and shelter birds.

This time of year, most grasses are flowering or have showy plumes.

Many of these plumes produce seeds for birds to munch on.

Foliage left up for the winter months provide wind brakes and protection from harsh winter winds

Birds may also make a mad dash to flee a predator.

Not to mention that the dry foliage and plumes can give depth and motion to an otherwise drab landscape.

In spring, birds will be using bits and pieces for their nests.

Cut back your grasses 2 to 4 inches from the ground before new growth starts.

Most grasses are hardy to zone 5 and many are hardy to zone 4

There are a few hardy to zone 3.

Once established, ornamental grass needs little care.

Grasses come in about every shade of green there is.

You can find shades of blue.

Grasses with shades of yellow

There are grasses with shades of red.

Grasses with horizontal stripes and some with vertical stripes.

Some varieties are drought tolerant.

Others may prefer moist conditions.

Most prefer sunny locations, while a few prefer shade.

The fact is, there will be a grass for your location.

You can even get annual grasses.

There are so many varieties to choose from I can't go through them all.

Check with your local garden center or nursery.

Have them recommend what is good for your yard.

Or, do some homework and see what you may prefer instead.

I have 6 varieties of grasses and I'm sure the collection will continue to grow as I find and make room for them.

You are sure to be hooked on grasses when you see a bird hanging onto a stalk and dancing in the wind.

An added bonus, grasses are deer resistant.

Check out the yards around you.

Hit the local garden centers and nurseries.

I'm sure you can find a grass for your yard.

Remember, fall is the best time to plant.

Well friend, it is time to get this letter sent out so I best get going.

Do have a blessed week and continue to smile.

Until next time.

Your friend,

Ron

Choosing Bird Seed or Bird Food (Part 3)

Corn: cracked, shelled, whole

If you are a bird feeder on a budget or if you are feeding hoards of birds feeding corn is one way to keep your birds happy.

Whole ears of corn offered on spike feeders or on hangers will make the woodpeckers and squirrels very happy. It's great fun to watch a squirrel trying to figure out a revolving corn wheel. Place your squirrel feeders as far as possible from your other bird feeders.

Shelled corn in hopper bird feeder or hanging tray feeders will attract cardinals, jays, ravens, crows, and grosbeaks.

Cracked corn in ground feeder trays will attract quails, grouse, pheasants, ducks, dove, starlings blackbirds, house sparrows and cowbirds.

Corn has a couple of serious problems: First, it is the bird food that has the highest risk of becoming contaminated with aflatoxins, which is harmful to birds. Second, it is a favorite of bears, raccoons, and deer-none of which we need to be feeding.

To decrease the chance of contamination don't buy corn in plastic bags, do not let it get wet (I keep mine in metal trash cans and only keep 50 pounds on hand), and in very humid or wet weather only put out what will be eaten in a day. Make sure you clean up the old corn and dispose of it, the compost pile is a good place.

It is best to have all of your corn feeders away from your other bird feeders so the less aggressive birds will not be scared off. If you can, separate them with a screen of shrubs or trees.

Never use any corn that has any type of die on it because it is probably a poison. Do not feed any popped corn it spoils too easily.

If you have a snow or an ice storm cracked corn is a good way to feed a lot of birds quickly. Feed smaller amounts several times during the day to reduce waste and spoilage.

Suet

Suet is now considered to be most kinds of beef fat and is safe to feed to birds. Suet is very attractive to insect eating birds, including woodpeckers, jays, nuthatches, chickadees, and starlings. Occasionally cardinals, wrens, thrashers, kinglets, creepers, and even some warblers will visit suet feeders. Suet is a high calorie energy source, that is easy for many birds to digest and metabolize, and is very important to birds in cold weather.

Raw suet goes bad quickly when the temperature is above freezing for any extended time. It is recommended tat you use rendered suet, which has been melted and has had the impurities removed. rendered suet can still get soft in the summer and coat the belly feathers of birds. If the bird is nesting the suet can clog the pores of the eggs preventing the embryo from getting enough oxygen.

Most of the suet cakes you can buy have a mixture of corn meal, cracked corn, peanuts, fruits or dried insects. Corn and peanuts can provide a medium for bacteria growth. Therefore, you may want to make your own suet cakes or make sure you are buying a high quality product. Always check the contents and the expiration date. I keep my suet cakes in the refrigerator until I use them.

I use several types of suet feeders including upside down feeders and combination suet/tray feeders.

I hope this article will help you in choosing bird food/seed and let you know what birds you; can expect to attract.

Keeping the Deer Out of Your Yard or Garden

What lovely, gentle creatures are deer, leaping though the forest, munching grass in the clearings...pulling the bark off your trees...nibbling your flowers...chowing down on your apples...raiding your bird feeders....oops! Suddenly, Bambi isn't quite so adorable. But, of course, they are only doing what comes naturally and, unlike humans, they are only destroying your garden to survive....not for the sport of it. An average deer eats 6-8 pounds of forage a day. And, on a more serious note, the more deer that are attracted to your garden, the higher the chances of them bringing in deer ticks that can carry the dreaded Lyme disease. Another repercussion of your yard and garden attracting deer, is that the dining deer may saunter off into the streets surrounding your home becoming a road hazard, causing harm to vehicle, human, and deer alike. So, what to do? There must be some humane method that protects both garden and deer, something that does not require constant re-administering, something that works day and night, rain or shine, winter or summer. The answer is a physical barrier.

Oh, no! Not some ugly fencing that detracts from the natural beauty of my garden or makes it look like a prison enclosure!

No, indeed. There is a wonderful product called "Deer Barrier" that will protect your plants (and bird feeding stations) from marauding deer. This special mesh fencing has no sharp edges and the openings are too small to get a deer's nosey nose stuck or entangled. It is made from strong, UV protected material that will withstand the poking of deer and other animals and will not fade, rust, corrode, or attract electricity. Its open mesh design and black color blend in with the surrounding landscape and does not detract from the beauty of your garden. "Deer Barrier" is available in rolls, 7' tall and either 100' or 350' in length. It is very comfortable to work with and easily attaches to trees or posts.

But I have a serious deer problem. A whole herd of them have discovered my garden. Is "Deer Barrier" strong enough for me?

Not to worry--- if you are in a high-density deer population area where it seems like the "Deer Tour Bus" has let off all its passengers at your personal wildlife cafe and they are treating your garden like an all-you-can-eat buffet, there is a step higher for you in the Deer Barrier product line. You are a likely candidate for "X-treme Deer Barrier." This product has all the appealing features of "Deer Barrier" but is one foot taller and has twice the tensile strength. It is available in rolls, 8' tall and 100' in length.

Ever wonder what deer really love to eat? Here is a list of their personal favorites. (If you have these in your garden, you should very seriously consider using either "Deer Barrier" or "X-treme Deer Barrier.")

Balsam Fir (Abies balsamea )

Fraser Fir (Abies fraseri)

Norway Maple (Acer platanoides)

EasternRedbud (Cercis canadensis)

Atlantic White Cedar (Chamaecyparis thyoides)

Clematis (Clematis spp.)

Cornelian Dogwood (Cornus mas)

Winged Euonymus (Euonymus alatus)

Wintercreeper (Euonymus fortunei)

English Ivy (Hedera helix)

Apples (Malus spp.)

Cherries (Prunus spp.)

Plums (Prunus spp.)

Rhododendrons (Rhododendron spp.)

Evergreen Azaleas (Rhododendron spp.)

Catawba Rhododendron (Rhododendron spp.)

Hybrid Tea Rose (Rosa (x) hybrid)

Make sure the only deer in your garden are the decorative concrete kind. Use either "Deer Barrier" or "X-treme Deer Barrier" to keep the "wild" in wildlife and keep the wildlife in the wild!

Tina has lots of deer around her property and sometimes even in her garden. She knows that a good way to keep them out is with deer barrier or extreme deer barrier.

The Eliminator Rectangular Varmint Proof Scatter Plate for Deer and Game Feeders

The Eliminator Rectangular Varmint Proof Scatter Plate for Deer and Game FeedersTired of wind, raccoons, and squirrels wasting your expensive corn and protein feeds? The-Eliminator is the solution!

The-Eliminator spinner plate is an innovative new design that can be added to any deer feeder with a 1/4" motor shaft. When the motor spins, The-Eliminator drops down and throws feed. When the feeding cycle is complete the spring-loaded shaft returns the plate to the top position.

Mount The-Eliminator against your funnel or downspout for a tight seal.

It excels as a spinner plate for truck, ATV, and UTV feeders because it is nearly immune to the bouncing and vibrations typical of this application.

Does The-Eliminator cost more than tradition spinners? Yes, but with ever-rising price of corn and protein it could easily pay for itself in a few short months.

Note: This is the rectangular model. We also have a round model available.

Know Your Bird Feeders; Part 2

In my last article, I mentioned the popularity of tube feeders

and what to look for.

Other feeders like hoppers and platform feeders serve a

purpose and need as well. Today I will discuss platforms

and what to look for in a quality platform feeder.

A platform feeder is self describing. It is a platform made of

wood or screening with four sides about two inches high.

Platforms usually sit on four legs or some are hung by a

cord or metal chain.

Platform feeders serve a purpose and can attract the

greatest variety of birds and other wildlife. Squirrels, deer,

chipmunks, rabbits and mice find grazing on your birdseed

as easy pickings and will continue to return.

Platform feeders are open to the elements where seed

can get wet and buried in the snow.

Platforms require more frequent cleaning as seed can

sprout and mold quicker. Not to mention that birds will

hop around in the seed, often leaving a calling card.

Others birds hop in and peck around, eating seed and

other birds droppings.

To many sickness and diseases are passed this way, that

is the main reason for keeping a platform feeder clean.

I personally put less birdseed out and clean it every other

day

What to look for when you are ready to purchase or build a

platform feeder.

Look for durability. Is the feeder made of recycled plastic?

If it is wood, is it made of cedar or redwood. Anything less

wont do. Recycled plastics will last a life time. Redwood

and cedar have their own anti bug and anti rot chemicals

built in so they too should last for years and years if taken

care of properly.

Look for or build with these quality products and make sure

it is held together with stainless steel or zinc coated screws.

Regular screws will rust away and staples will pull out

leaving your feeder a crumbled mess.

Are you planning on hanging your platform feeder? Make

sure it has a stainless steel or powder coated chain. Cords

will rot and can be chewed off.

Most important of all, is a screened bottom. Anything less

will not do. My platform has a removable screen. A screen

I can slide in and out. A screened bottom allows for drainage after a rain. It also allows me to remove it to scrub and sanitize as often as needed. Cleanliness is important.

Are you going to paint or stain your platform feeder? If you

chose to do so, be sure to use a water base paint or stain.

Oils can penetrate birdseed or rub off onto feathers and

brought back to nests.

Birds and small wildlife are more susceptible to predators

when feeding from a platform feeder. Placement of all your

feeders should be close to protection. Place feeders near

your trees and shrubs for protection, yet in a place where

they are easy to get at and enjoy.

Always use a quality feed for your birds.

To sum it all up. You want a platform built to last and with a

screened bottom or platform. Taking that extra time or dollars

to buy or make your platform feeder is worth it in the long run.

Tips to Hunting Whitetail Deer

To hunt whitetail deer before the onset of the breeding season, you need to make a close inspection of feeding areas and deer trails, as in preparation for winter and the ensuing breeding time, both the male and female deer feed more to gain weight. The breeding season or rut varies in different locations, depending on the intensity of the climate and availability of food. The hunting season changes likewise. Hence it is best to concentrate on the feeding areas, deer trails and water holes when you go whitetail deer hunting.

Organize Food Plots with Care:

Food plots are measured areas of land set aside to plant corn, clover, rye and other grains that are good as deer fodder. These plots vary in dimension and can be as small as a few square yards or as big as several acres. Deer prefer long and narrow food plots as they provide more security. Tempting deer by pouring grain in feeders or baiting is also an allurement. This can, however, be risky as there is a law against baiting in some states.

Where to Place the Stands for Effective Use:

Another successful tactic is to hunt in deer trails that have high traffic. These busy trails can be found between bedding and feeding areas. The stands are generally placed in the wooded part of the trails.

Deer are vary animals and can smell, hear or see hunters who are well hidden. Therefore, it is important to employ extreme caution as the deer are highly guarded even when they are under cover.

Here is a quick recap of the different tactics that hunter can employ in order to come up with a prize trophy before the breeding season starts:

• Plant the fodder crops well in time.

• Locate frequently used trails to feeding areas.

• Place the stands early so that the deer can get familiar with these additions to their surroundings.

• Concentrate on and keep close to feeding area, trails and water holes.

If you follow these instructions carefully your chances of getting a good memento before the rut will be greatly enhanced.

Quality Whitetail Deer Management Using Supplemental Feed

Quality whitetail deer management has not been around for very long, but lately has taken off throughout the country. Areas that come to mind include Florida, Kansas, Iowa, the meca of bow hunting the northeast and of course Texas. Deer management has been around since the beginning since anytime an animal is harvested, its impact will be reflected in the health of the herd. With recent introduction of "quality" to the program, one wonders what does that mean? The hunting community now realizes the power we possess while in the field. And, how we help or hurt the herd is determined every time we step into the woods. Quality deer management has as many variables as there are fish in the sea. I will discuss supplemental feeding using feeders in this article.

I hunt in Texas under a state sanctioned MLDP program (Managed Land Deer Permits). The state gives us extra privileges with the expectations we will conduct ourselves with the health of the herd in mind first. We have fun with the end result in mind. Our ranch, as with most in Texas, utilize deer feeders to help accomplish that goal.

During deer season we will feed a corn/protein mix. The corn provides a strong attractant so we can make solid judgments on the right deer to remove based on predetermined criteria. The corn also provides a carbohydrate replacement which is crucial in order for bucks to maintain a healthy physiological being while they push themselves during the demands of the rut. Hopefully, the deer go into the spring season in decent shape. The better shape they are in coming out of winter, the larger the antlers will be the next season. Once spring is upon us, it is time to start feeding protein.

I convert all my spincast feeders to free flow gravity tubes by removing the timer mechanisms and installing the gravity tubes. A product call a deer feeder helper makes this a breeze, taking only minutes to convert. The optimal way of feeding protein is to use the spincast feeder and ensuring the pellets are contained or delivered into a trough or feed tube, which keeps the pellets off the ground and from being destroyed by moisture.

Creating a housing (bucket) around your timer connected to a tube works well for this. Eliminating untargeted animals is also encouraged as there is no need to supplement the diets of raccoons or feral hogs. Feed pens and varmint guards are always a must. There are hundreds of different types of protein feeders out there. These are used solely for supplemental feeding and not normally hunted over. Usually placed in sanctuary type locations.

They can be quite large and require auger type loading to be efficient. Loading 4000 pounds one bag at a time can be very taxing and costly. Buying bulk is always considerably cheaper. Protein pellets come in many different types. I recommend shopping for an affordable 16%-20% brand containing extra minerals to help with antler growth. Some are water repellant which is beneficial if you chose to dispense on the ground.

Protein pellets will tend to clog in spincast feeders due to moisture swelling the pellets, however, this is not detrimental if you use a feeder helper as you can simply unlatch the feeder helper and remove any obstruction or clog. If you chose to spincast your protein pellets, you might consider feeding after dark. Deer are nocturnal by nature and this helps ensure the protein is eaten promptly and not left to be ruined by the elements. I believe this also helps the whitetail trophy bucks to claim this as his territory, which hopefully could prove fatal if you done your part at the range.

Of course, there are many different mediums to use trying to achieve a healthy deer herd such as food plots, prescribed burns, removing excessive cedars and mesquite, and adequate harvesting of the deer. A game biologist is always key for those eager to hear his/her opinion and advise.

I hope you find this information useful and informative.

Happy hunting. Chris Nicholes

Nutrition and eating habits of deer

deer eating Nutrition and Feeding Habits of Deer

We know that not only adequate nutrition produces a healthy herd, but it also affects the quality of horns.  Habits of nutrition and feeding of deer varies from place to another and from station to station, but understand the habits of its area is an important part of a successful management program.

The two variables that affect nutrition and diet of deer are the availability and quality.  Subarctic deer are very sensitive and selective and have a wide range of food preferences and nutritional needs.  It is easy to see why feeding options can be confusing.  No single plant species maintains the levels of nutrients throughout the year, required by deer successful growth and reproduction; Therefore, it is important to be well informed about the different resources.

Browse: this classification refers to the growing soft part (stems and leaves) of woody perennials, trees, shrubs, vines and plants is usually called a "brush".  These plants provide a large amount of protein and it is easier for the deer to digest.  Review is normally available throughout the year.

Herbaceous: are plants often referred to as "weeds" or wild flowers.  This includes all of flowering herbaceous plants are herbs.  Herbaceous are highly nutritious; they contain high levels of protein, phosphorus and vitamins.  Forbes is one of the favorites among subarctic because they are easily digestible; However, normally available only for a short period of time (most common during and after the "wet" season).

Mast: this is a classic deer food source and refers to the fruits of plants is defined as a species search. Mast includes things such as acorns, berries, fruits and similar articles. The deer migrate and it will move to the area as a mature fruit tree crops and fall to the ground.  Masts are important in the diet of deer, but are seasonal and vary from year to year.

Grass: grass and herbaceous plants, grass and sedges and rushes.  Pastures are less important to deer food category, but use will rise slightly during the spring and if there are pastures. During the winter months young, cool-season grasses such as wintergrass, Ballico and rescuegrass can be important sources of protein.

Grain crops: this kind of food includes elements of forage plant for agriculture, grazing, or specifically for wildlife in the form of food parcels.  To improve the quality of the diet you should plant a season of cold and warm season food trace per square mile.  Cold season crops typically include clover, vetch, wheat, oats and Ballico. Common warm season crops including peas and other legumes varieties and millet.  Food and supplementary food parcels are not substitutes for the proper administration of population and Habitat.

Commercial sources: also known as supplementary feeding, this includes feeds dismissed as supplements (protein), or simply those considered attractive hunting of deer (maize).    Complementary feeding is an important factor in the management of deer and a power source when native forage is insufficient in quantity or quality.  The common attractive Texas deer hunting is whole corn distributed through previously timed deer feeders and subarctic hunting season.  The most common dismissed supplement is protein and can be distributed through the free choice of feeders.  It is important to note that supplementary feeding of deer is expensive, and unless it is done correctly, is of little or no benefit to the deer.

Nutrition is probably easier to control component in the production of quality bucks with horns of quality. They are highly adaptable and while food preferences and requirements vary considerably between regions, understanding of and nutritional needs will get on the right path to production for a herd of quality.

Squirrel Proof Bird Feeders - Do They Really Work?

You have spent good money on a feeder that claimed it was squirrel proof. However, the critters spend an entire day eating your bird seed. So, is there really a squirrel proof bird feeder I can trust? This is probably the most asked question we receive. Have you tried all those feeder that claim to be squirrel proof? Are the squirrels on the feeder all day long? We can help you understand how these feeders are designed and what their purpose really is.

A properly designed squirrel proof bird feeder should thwart the average squirrel 95% of the time. That means less than 5% of the time the animals will successfully obtain a bird seed reward for their diligence. For most people, this is fine. However, some are not pleased with this result and, unfortunately, allow these small number of invaders spoil the marvelous hobby of backyard bird feeding. I know of one customer who literally flips out each time she even sees a squirrel.

When you provide free food for your birds, you are basically offering to any aspect of nature, including deer, fox, raccoons, and yes, squirrels. Learning to enjoy all of nature in it's glory simplifies this hobby tremendously. Birds have learned to live with squirrels and a successful backyard birder can too.

Many of our customers use a humane trap and drive great distances to release these intruders into the wilds. We have one man who has trapped over 75 squirrels in the past two years and is still going strong. Oh well, it keeps him busy and he is having fun doing it. However, for most of us, living with a couple of squirrels is part of nature and we enjoy that as well.

There are a number of excellent feeders designed specifically to keep red, grey, and fox squirrels from monopolizing the bird seed. Each one can satisfy your desire to allow the birds to feed, but not the squirrels. Be sure to inform your local bird store about what squirrel proof bird feeder you choose. Let them know what critters you wish to deter and what birds you wish to attract.

At http://www.WildBirdDepot.com we have been satisfying backyard birders for over two decades. End the war with squirrels. Bird feeding is supposed to be a stress reducing hobby. Do not let a few critters ruin it for you. It is possible to attract between 25-30 different varieties of wild birds in your backyard, if the feeder you choose doesn't become a squirrel feeder. Choose the right squirrel proof bird feeder the first time. Save your hard earned money for the bird seed, not the bird feeder. No more damaged feeders or wasted seeds. Own the world's best squirrel proof bird feeder, the one model that has never been returned to our store!

5 Tips to Building and Maintaining a Deer Feeder

Although it may not be for everyone, hunting is a popular activity pursued by a lot of individuals. For hunters, setting up the bait, waiting for the animal to come close enough and fall for it, and chasing them to hunt them down is a thrill that is unparalleled to any other activity.

Hunting the Whitetail Deer Buck

The whitetail deer is one of the most elusive creatures to hunt down. Therefore, hunters need deer feeders to lure them in before the hunt can begin. And here's a tip: waiting for them in camouflage for hours under the sun and finally having them come close enough to the feeder so that one can hunt them down, is a process that is only understood by those who indulge in such an activity.

Importance of Setting up a Deer Feeder

• Deer feeding equipment is a very useful for hunters and zoo keepers alike. It should be made into an appropriate design in order to attract the animal to it long enough.

• Some deer feeding equipment is reasonably priced. Hunters usually use these feeders to lure one deer at a time. However, if you are looking to attract more than one animal, you might need a bigger deer feeder.

• Make sure that your deer feeder is high enough for tall deer. It is also important to ensure that the food inside the trough used in the feeder is kept free of dirt and water.

• The food should be dry when the animal reaches it. For this, a roof is required which should be high enough to accommodate the animal.

• As long as you can make the area surrounding the deer feeder safe enough for the animal, you should be able to attract deer. A big deer feeder may require a fence surrounding it to keep other animals at bay, though. And this fence should be low enough for the deer to jump over it to enter the feeder ground.

If your feeder requires a stable foundation, then you can dig holes on four corners and fill them with sand, cement and water mixture before fitting in the legs of the feeder into them. See what's appropriate for your area.

Deer Feeders and Feeding Tips - A Guide to a Safe and Enjoyable Home Hobby

All of us love deer and many people enjoy attracting them to their yards but some do not know how to do it well or at all. I have received many requests in regard to deer feeding and tips to do so properly. To begin with, feeding deer is very simple. Their sense of smell will direct them right to the feeder and your offering. When other food sources are becoming scarce, they will follow the scent of good quality feed over long distances. Once they have found it, they will be more than happy to stay around as long as there is a fairly consistent supply.

There are various aspects of feeding deer that need to be addressed before setting out a feeder. First and foremost. Deer are beautiful creatures and look to be friendly, cuddly and approachable. This is very far from the fact of the matter. Deer can become aggressive, although rarely, for many reasons and I advise to keep your distance and do not approach them for any reason. If you find a wounded deer, or any wild or domestic animal, call your local wildlife control organization and do not approach the animal. Any wounded animal is potentially very dangerous.

In order to feed deer properly and safely, pick a location away from your home with a good viewing area. Do not set a feeder near a doorway or other area that is or may be frequented by people or pets. If someone walks around a corner or through a doorway and comes face to face with a deer, that deer needs to make a decision. It will go into one of two modes, flight or fight. It prefers to flee and usually does but if it feels it cannot, it may decide to fight instead. Keep your feeders away from any area where people may come into close contact.

With that said, feeding deer is a wonderful hobby and one that can be done safely and enjoyably. Once you have picked a safe location for your feeder, it's time to feed. We highly recommend whole shelled corn as the staple food. Whole shelled corn is the dried corn kernels that have been stripped from the cob as a whole seed. It is a high protein feed, readily available at any feed supply store and is the least expensive to buy. Most importantly, it remains edible for many days under high moisture conditions. When you start looking for suitable deer feed, you'll find many types of deer feed on the market. Some are excellent and some are not. We're often asked about commercial deer chows.

Deer Chow is a manufactured, pelletized product utilizing a mix of various feed types and may contain animal remnant by-products from slaughterhouses or the like. If these by-products are not processed correctly they may contain various diseases that can be introduced to the deer population through a feeding activity. Please do not use deer chows unless you are positive they are tested safe.

Another issue with deer chow, and my personal dislike for them, is their inability to remain palatable to your wildlife once it gathers moisture. Deer chow has no resistance to water and even humidity will render it worthless. Any rain, melting snow or high humidity will "puff" the chow into a mass of sloop. Think of a bowl of bran type cereal. By the time you have reached the bottom of the bowl, the cereal is mush. This is deer chow when it gets wet and your deer WILL NOT eat it. You have now wasted money on an expensive product and it must be discarded. Whole shelled corn is by far a superior food type. The encased kernel of corn protects itself from moisture and will remain edible for many days, wet or dry. Some people use cracked corn in hopes of feeding their turkeys or other large birds such as crows, blue jay and cardinals. Cardinals love my own deer feeder and use it all day long. This is a great idea as long as the feed is consumed quickly, within a day or so. Since the kernel, or pericarp or outer shell of the seed, of corn is "cracked" open, it losses its capability to protect itself from moisture. When exposed to wetness, it too will absorb water and my not be eaten by your deer. Turkeys and other birds have no issue with it though and if you have a good population of turkeys, they will readily consume your offering.

The MOST important rule of feeding deer is to offer one type of feed consistently. Deer are ruminants, like cows, and to properly digest their foods they develop a bacterium in their stomachs to start the process. Many unaware people start feeding their deer when the weather gets very cold or after other food sources are gone. This is a nice gesture but it takes many days for deer to produce the bacteria. Hence, your offering fills their bellies but they are getting little if any actual nutritional value. No matter when you start feeding, keep the same base food type available throughout the year or season. Once your deer have built up the appropriate bacteria, corn will become a premium food source. Its high levels of protein and complex sugars will do wonders in sustaining them through the hard months or helping them grow to their full potential.

Why feed deer? Besides the obvious reasons of our own enjoyment, Doe Deer that receive good nutrition throughout winter will produce the healthiest fawns in late spring. Most Does carry two fawns and it takes a lot of energy to grow them in a healthy manner. Feeding deer throughout the year will help hold them in your area which means they will bring their babies in late spring. Believe me, this is a treat you will not want to miss. Watching a pair or groups of baby deer feeding and frolicking around your yard will warm your heart like few other experiences. It is one of my most awaited wildlife moments of the whole year, I guarantee it will become one of yours too.

I highly recommend adding this new level of wildlife feeding to your home. It is easy and when done correctly, is perfectly safe and extremely rewarding. Using proteins for subarctic hunting feeders

Protien Feeder Using Protein Feeders for Whitetail HuntingRouting season is long and bucks will soon begin to shed their antlers.  With regard to the management of horns is important to consider the five necessary categories for maximum growth; protein, energy, minerals, vitamins and water.  Adequate nutrition during the months of February and March are especially important, because deer which should replace the body fat and muscle lost during the winter months before growth horns can reach their potential.  Now is the time to start thinking about how providing protein to the deer in the ranch or lease.  Inadequate protein intake will reduce development of horns and could affect the development for several successive years.  They help you manage the excellent results during the hunting season to provide protein.

Many hunters, land managers and biologists believe that a 16% protein food source is necessary for that bucks achieved a maximum growth of horns and to achieve maximum production fawn.  Protein levels are of utmost importance at certain times of the year.  For the growth of the horns, this period is late winter until the end of the period of growth of horns. For the production of Fawn, the period when the levels of proteins are most critical for is during fetal development and breastfeeding. And, in general, protein levels are higher in native forage during the spring and fall and are lower during the summer and winter.  It is no coincidence that horns growth and fetal development Fawn coincide with seasonally high level of protein in the spring.

But periods when proteins is limited, as during the summer and winter? Deer can compensate for this seasonality of proteins through recycling of the protein, but this means that the proteins will be used for critical functions in the first place.

Although deer can survive a dry spring, bucks will produce antlers that are smaller than their potential and not overrides fawns before birth or shortly thereafter to leave them. Protein levels are not critical to the survival of deer, but "too much" protein can permanently increase the size of horns, rates of flatterers, and in most cases.

If you are interested in supplementing the white-tailed deer, remember that winter and summer are the critical moments in relation to the availability of protein, but provide additional protein during the spring and autumn will improve the conditions of body of deer on his property and put them in better shape for the difficult periods.

The best practice of deer management is maintaining the population in line with the carrying capacity of the Habitat and provide additional choice food. In this way, the food is really supplementary. A herd of Red Deer well-feed will be very productive, often produce 60-100% crops chamois. This means that 50 can regularly produce fawns for 30-50 each year.

Deer feeders will continue to play a key role in the management of deer in the coming months.   Feeders of corn for feeds protein Exchange will attract deer to its stand and providing adequate nutrition to his flock during this period of growth.  With a single Deputy deer feeders can be easily transformed to meet the needs of corn and protein.  Protein tubes are interchangeable and designed for distribution, ensuring optimum potential for up to four animals with virtually no damage of feed horn.  Our feeders are considered the best in the market due to its unique design and durability.  2000 Standard sizes available in 600 lbs, 1000 lbs, lbs this 2 1 unit offers solutions to provide the nutritional needs throughout the year and maximize the experience of hunting.

Raising and Catching Catfish

The channel catfish, one of the best tasting and sport friendly fish made for the rod angler. I believe that this fish reigns supreme in it's habitat. A fish made for fishing by kids of all ages. you can have a good time catching and eating this fish. Watch out for it's fins and have a pair of pliers or skin pullers at the ready and you will be prepared for a great experience. Chicken liver reigns supreme as bait to catch him. There are also many baits ready made by manufacturers to get him on your hook . Since the channel grows to such large proportions,a large hook and tough terminal gear should be used. I have kids and grandchildren who love to fish. Bass need bigger areas of water in which to live and grow large. Sun fish and bream are okay but they do not grow to large sizes. Kids love to catch the smaller fish but are especially delighted to have a change of pace and have a chance to hook into Mr. whiskers.

I wanted an area where my children could have fun in a clean environment. I had a stock tank built on my property for a reasonable cost. I started to build a fishing pier by myself. The rains came and the pond began to fill up with water. Any ideas that I had in my head about putting post supports in the ground for the pier were dashed. I obtained 55 gallon non metal drums at a reasonable cost and began to work. I built the floating pier next to the waters' edge without the use of any electricity. I used drills that worked off of batteries and hammer and nails, I used treated wood and spiral nails that would not rust in the elements. I used my 6 year old as a pilot to test the stability of my project. After several dunks in the water I added structure onto the pier until it was very stable. I added a box structure on the end of the pier to hold one of my deer feeders. I cut a hole in the bottom and bolted the feeder down. Since I was one person and trying to find the most simple and most efficient means for building, I installed ropes on both sides in two locations. The ropes were secured to trees on the shoreline. The ropes could be secured so that they would not interfere with your fishing. This setup also aids levity in the natural rise and fall of water levels.

I went on a shopping trip to one of the local fish hatcheries, I came away with several hundred channel catfish in plastic bags, The fingerlings averaged from 4-6 inches long. I had already procured cat fish chow from one of the local feed stores. Dog food will do just as well. I put the pellets into the feeder and set the timer to discharge feed early in the morning and about 1 hour before sunset. Monitoring the quantity of pellets released can give you a good idea of how much the fish are actually eating and how much is waste. I changed the batteries in the feeder occasionally and watched as the fish came up to feed on the floating pellets. Catfish do not eat as much in winter months, so adjust the feed output accordingly. I waited until the fish reached a certain length before fishing was allowed.

After 2 1/2 years wait the kids and family were catching catfish that weighed 8 pounds. We had many fish fries where many families were fed. My kids and family looked forward to going fishing at the stock tank and many good times were enjoyed by us all. Outdoor activities like fishing are good ways for kids and adults to spend their leisure time. In this instance we were bringing a lot of food home to the larder. MY son developed an affinity for the outdoors and now my grandchildren are beginning to reap the rewards of my efforts so many years ago.

How to Use a Deer Feeder to Attract Deer

A deer feeder can bring wildlife right into your backyard, giving you a glimpse of this wild animal up close. These tips will help you use your feeder properly, so that you have a view of the best that your local wildlife has to offer.

Choose Your Location

One of the most important things that you can do is to choose a location that is away from the home, with the deer feeder still visible. Deer can occasionally become aggressive when threatened, so make sure that guests are aware of the feeder so that they can maintain their distance. You may also want to restrict your pet's access to the area, since some animals, like dogs, can frighten the deer away. A good option for placement of the feeder is an open field, or the edge of a wooded area with the feeder visible but a good distance away from the home.

Choose Your Food

Deer will eat a mixture of grains, including prepared deer pellets, corn and other types of grains. You can purchase these foods from your local feed and grain shop, or a farm supply store. Typically, you will want to choose a whole grain, such as dried corn, to use in your deer feeder. Not only are whole options healthier, they will also only need to be replaced every few days depending on the number of deer that visit your feeder.

Corn is also a little less costly than prepared deer pellets, which will tend to spoil if left in the rain or snow. You will want to check the corn in your deer feeder about twice a week, remembering to wash your hands before touching the food. This will help ensure deer aren't afraid to come close to the feeder. Also, remember to use the same type of corn or feed on a regular basis to help keep the deer coming back.

When to Feed Deer

Some people only use their deer feeder in late fall and winter, but deer will come to your home year round if you provide food for them. It is often best to begin trying out your feeder in the cooler months, however, since food will become scarcer and deer will be more open to wandering into inhabited areas for food. One of the benefits of feeding deer year round is that in the spring and summer months you will be able to see both parents and offspring come to the feeder.

Does usually give birth to their fawns in the spring, when many homeowners stop using their deer feeder. While it isn't necessary for the survival of the deer to use a feeder year round, if you love watching these spectacular creatures, it is well worth the extra effort to feed them year round.

A deer feeder can bring you hours of entertainment with a little planning. You will find that the deer feeder will have regular visitors, which you may come to recognize within just a couple of weeks. You will love being able to see these deer grow and have their families each year.

Plans For Building a Homemade Deer Feeder

Feeding wild deer has become a very popular hobby and over the years my company has literally provided tens of thousands of these feeders. It is not uncommon for us to receive requests from woodworkers and others who wish to build their own feeders. Unlike most companies, we are glad to help anyone wishing to make their own homemade feeder since often times we receive replies from these same people with ideas for improvements, or more than likely new product ideas.

To build your own 36" trough style deer feeder in the Hurley-Byrd fashion you first need to gather some materials. You will need lumber of course and all Hurley-Byrd Deer Feeders are crafted from western red cedar. You are welcome to use pine but only expect it to last a few years. Purchase one 1x8 piece of lumber that is eight feet long and a 2x4 with a minimum length of three feet. Keep in mind each piece of lumber will need to be ripped to narrow widths. Some lumber yards will be glad to assist if you do not have the tools capable of performing this task. While at the lumber store, also purchase 14-#8x1 ½" wood screws. We use brass screws in our feeders but any good wood screw will be fine for a short term feeder. Also buy four ¼" x 20 x 3" carriage bolts, matching wing nuts and washers. These are used to attach the legs to the trough.

Once the lumber is home, it's time to build the vee shaped trough. Cut your 1x8 into 2-36" lengths. Leave one piece its full 7¼" width and rip the other to 6 ½". Take the remaining two feet of the 1x8 and rip it to 3 ¾" in width. This piece of lumber must be cut into two triangles with a miter saw. Since these four pieces of lumber get attached to one another at their edges, screw holes must be drilled first or the lumber will soon split. On the 1x7 1/4"x 36, drill two holes at each end 3/8" from the end and 1 1/2" from the sides. Along one long edge, drill six equally spaced holes 3/8" from the edge. On the 1x6 ½"x 36, drill two holes in each end 3/8" from the end and 1 ½" from the sides. Take the two triangles and drill two 5/8" diameter holes perpendicular to the short point that are located 1" and 2 ¼" from the long flat edge.

Now that the lumber has its screw holes in place, it is time for assembly. Lay the 1x6 ½" board on a flat work bench so that one edge is close to the bench's end. Stand the 1 x 7 ¼" on its edge next to the 1x6 ¼ so the screw holes are closest to the bench and aligned with the 1x6 1/4. Secure the larger piece of lumber to the smaller one using the wood screws making sure the ends of each board align with one another. Once all the screws are in place, turn the trough over and set it on one the triangles so that the triangle sets flush with the trough's end. It's a good practice to predrill the screw holes for the triangle using the holes you previously drilled in the long length lumber. This will keep your triangles from splitting or breaking prematurely. Attach each triangle to the trough. Drill out four 5/8" drain holes in the trough's vee bottom. Your trough is now complete and can be sanded if desired or left rough but we suggest a little sanding to remove any sharp edges.

Now it's time for the legs. Gather up your 2x4 and cut it to 36" in length and rip it into two equal halves. Using the triangles as your guide, drill two 5/8" holes in one end of the leg on its center line. Each hole will be 1" and 2 ¼" from the top of the leg respectively. Once you have done this, you can apply an exterior grade finish to the whole feeder or leave the lumber raw. We use a high grade penetrating oil finish to enhance the feeder's beauty and add longevity to the feeder. If you apply a finish, allow it to dry appropriately and you are now ready to set out the new feeder.

To set the feeder outside, you will need to attach the legs to the trough using the carriage bolts, washers and wing nuts. Once it is assembled, it is time to set it up. Find the location you desire for the feeder. See my eZineArticle "Deer Feeders and Feeding Tips - A Guide to a Safe and Enjoyable Home Hobby" for setting the feeder in a safe and proper location. For this type of feeder, you will need to dig two holes 12" deep and 36" apart. Once complete, stand the feeder in the holes and backfill the holes enough to hold the feeder. Stand back, look at the feeder and level it in all directions. Once level, completely backfill the holes and tamp down the fresh dirt. Fill your feeder and within a few days you will start enjoying the deer on a regular basis. Read my previously mentioned article regarding safe feeding locations and proper feeds for your deer. Enjoy and contact us with your success stories.
